Common questions about SonicWall firewall bundles, licensing, and upgrades.
Appliance Only gives you the firewall hardware with basic stateful firewall, SD-WAN, and cloud management — but no security subscriptions. TotalSecure Advanced Edition bundles the same hardware with SonicWall's full Advanced Protection Service Suite (APSS): Gateway Anti-Virus, Intrusion Prevention, Application Control, Content Filtering, DNS Security, Capture ATP sandboxing, Anti-Spam, 24x7 support, and cloud reporting. If you need threat protection out of the box, TotalSecure Advanced is the way to go.
Secure Upgrade Plus lets you trade in an older SonicWall firewall (or a competitive firewall you've owned for 6+ months) for a significant discount on a new unit with full APSS licensing. Your old SonicWall must be registered on MySonicWall. This is the most cost-effective upgrade path if you're replacing an existing firewall.
The Advanced Protection Service Suite (APSS) includes: Gateway Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware, Intrusion Prevention Service (IPS), Application Control, Content Filtering Service (Premium), DNS Security, Capture Advanced Threat Protection (cloud sandboxing), Anti-Spam, 24x7 firmware & support, and Network Security Manager cloud reporting with 7-day analytics.
Your firewall hardware continues to function as a basic stateful firewall with SD-WAN capabilities. However, all APSS security services — antivirus signatures, IPS rules, content filtering, Capture ATP, etc. — stop updating and stop blocking new threats. You can renew your subscription at any time to restore full protection.
No. The High Availability unit is a secondary firewall that runs in Active/Standby mode and inherits the primary unit's security licenses. You only need to purchase the HA hardware — no additional APSS subscription is required. If the primary unit fails, the HA unit takes over automatically with zero downtime.
Yes. You can purchase APSS licenses separately at any time to add full security services to an Appliance Only unit. However, buying them bundled with TotalSecure Advanced Edition is typically more cost-effective than purchasing each service individually. If you think you'll need security services, we recommend starting with TotalSecure Advanced.
Cloud Secure Edge (CSE) is SonicWall's cloud-delivered Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), Cloud Access Security Broker (CASB), and Secure Web Gateway (SWG) solution. It extends your firewall's protection to remote users and cloud apps. CSE is included for 1 year exclusively with the 3-Year Secure Upgrade Plus Advanced bundle — it is not included in standard TotalSecure Advanced or Appliance Only packages.
The NSa 4800 delivers 20.0 Gbps firewall, 13.0 Gbps IPS, and 10.0 Gbps VPN with 6 million concurrent connections. It features 24x1GbE, 8x10GbE SFP+, and 4x25GbE SFP28 ports for 800–2,000 users.
The NSa 4800 nearly doubles the NSa 3800's throughput (20 Gbps vs 12 Gbps) and connections (6M vs 3M), adds 25GbE SFP28 ports for significantly higher bandwidth connectivity.
Yes. 20 Gbps throughput, 25GbE SFP28 connectivity, and 6 million concurrent connections make it well-suited for protecting data center perimeters.
Yes. TLS/SSL deep packet inspection at enterprise scale with minimal performance impact — essential for detecting threats in encrypted traffic.
Yes. Active/Standby HA with stateful failover and redundant power supplies for enterprise and data center edge deployments.
The NSa 4800 competes with the Fortinet FortiGate 600F, Sophos XGS 3100, and WatchGuard Firebox M590. Its 25GbE SFP28 ports provide a connectivity advantage over many competitors at this tier.

Yes. Free ground shipping on all SonicWall NSa 4800 hardware orders within the continental United States.
A high-capacity enterprise firewall for 800–2,000 users with 25GbE connectivity and data center edge protection.
20.0 Gbps throughput with 25GbE SFP28 ports for organizations with 800–2,000 users and heavy encrypted traffic.
6 million connections and 25GbE interfaces for protecting data center perimeters at high bandwidth.
10.0 Gbps VPN throughput aggregates encrypted tunnels from dozens of branch sites.
VLAN segmentation and high port density support multi-tenant architectures for MSPs and co-location facilities.
The NSa 4800 competes with the Fortinet FortiGate 600F, Sophos XGS 3100, and WatchGuard Firebox M590. Its 4x25GbE SFP28 ports provide a connectivity advantage over many competitors at this tier. SonicWall's APSS includes Capture ATP, DPI-SSL, and NSM management without separate licensing.
SonicWall's predictable subscription pricing simplifies budgeting compared to Sophos and WatchGuard's modular licensing approaches.
